The Acid House plot

The Acid House is a city fairy tale in three parts. The first part, entitled 'The Granton Star Cause', is a black comedy about revenge, football and religion. The fairly self-righteous Boab Coyle quickly loses the entire basis of his existence: he is thrown from his football team, his father wants him to finally live on his own and his fiancé breaks up with him. The second story, 'A Soft Touch ', is a satirical social sketch: softie Johnny marries the heavily pregnant Catriona, even though it is very doubtful whether he is the father of the child. Part three, 'The Acid House', is comic-surreal: Coco likes raves and the accompanying pills. During his slightly too intense trip, his consciousness is shifted to a newborn baby and vice versa.

Stays nice.

That Scottish is so deliciously juicy that McGuigan doesn't even have to put in that much effort to deliver a nice film. Together with Welsh's writing, it provides a cartload of fun, but often tragic characters.

Now that everyone is looking forward to the new Trainspotting, this is actually the ideal film to fill the void until the release of Boyle's latest. It starts off nice, the second short is a bit more dramatic, but in the end this is the film in which Ewen Bremner plays one of his best roles.

Mention The Acid House and somewhere a voice goes off that "Coco fuckin' Bryce!" screams. Great final short that gives the film a hefty boost. Visually sometimes a bit bare (nice editing and nice camera angles), but the acting is good, the stories are fun and the film flies by.

Trainspotting is one of my favorite movies, but this adaptation of some of Irvine Welsh's other stories is pretty annoying. A few actors from Trainspotting also appear here, but that's where the similarities end. This triptych is very ugly and poorly played. The plot lines are also absolutely uninteresting. It's all very exaggerated, bland and obvious. Shit, in short.

A confusing dive into the fringes of Scottish life.

Where Trainspotting already gave a good insight into the life of junkies and losers in Edinburgh, Acid House throws in a big hysterical kick on top. Sometimes successful, sometimes less so. The comparison with Trainspotting is certainly not up to this film, even if it comes from the same writer. The layering of that film is hard to find in this film, although the middle part in terms of genuine drama still comes close to the quality of Trainspotting

.

The opening film is funny, but ultimately also really over the top, and therefore less sharp. Some scenes feel a bit flat, so the shock value puts the story in the shade. Funny and original start to this collage film.

I always liked the second part the best. This extremely bleak story offers no glimmer of hope, but it does offer a realistic insight into the struggles of a destructive couple, with the man still trying to maintain the relationship for the sake of the child. When he is put to the test again and again by his antisocial neighbor, things get more and more dramatic. This story is a perfect short film. So raw, this got under my skin, and I can still empathize with the main character. You can understand the impotence he feels time and time again, and the hopelessness of life in a deprived neighborhood like this was rarely aptly depicted.

The last act is the least. The childish fact may sound nice on paper, but during the film it quickly turns into a lackluster sequence of predictable jokes. Especially after the second part, this is a very light-hearted ending, but that contrast makes it all the more striking how empty this story is and how flat the characters.

A movie with a few good scenes, and the middle part is top drama, but too thin and too incoherent across the board. A one of a kind.

2.5*
