Women Talking Dirty plot

"Behind every great woman... is her best friend"

Two women with completely different personalities develop an unlikely friendship. Ellen, a successful but shy cartoonist and Cora, an impulsive, vivacious single mother of two. They help each other to process the events in their lives: lovers, divorce, children, debts and large amounts of vodka. They are joined by a colorful group of strange characters, ranging from Ellen's boss who secretly has a crush on Cora, Ronald and George who are the only ones to discover the secret of a long and loving relationship and the enigmatic, all-knowing Emily. What Ellen and Cora don't know is that they share a secret that, when discovered, will put their friendship to the test.

Entertaining comedy that has not stood the test of time completely unscathed. Helena Bonham Carter steals the show.

Originally a play, and that explains the partly static setting. And in addition, it comes across as if the budget was minimal, with production values that look more like a TV movie. Yet that is only partly true - in addition to the beautiful cast, Elton John, for example, was involved in the soundtrack.

HBC gets both credit and flak for her Scottish accent - it convinces me, and Emmbrâh's pictures are quite nice too. Although I also hear that the locations are further apart than the script can accommodate.

As a film I thought it was a bit disappointing. Perhaps more than expected, the narrative also didn't appeal to me much.
