Think this is okay.

I do play a little now and then, but the Assassin's Creed games have never really appealed to me. I didn't know anything about the setting when I started this film. In hindsight, it doesn't seem necessary to me, perhaps even an advantage, because that way you can't compare media that are intrinsically completely different.

I really liked the setting and plot. Fantasy, but the type that you have to go along with yourself a bit. The film doesn't waste too much time explaining everything, probably that's why some find it a bit confused, but not everything can be pre-chewed genre cliches of course. In any case, I found it quite easy to follow, if this is too ambitious for a blockbuster I don't know what is.

Actors also do a good job, especially given the combination of the story and the seriousness with which it is presented. Visually there is also little to complain about, the alternation between present and past is nice and for once the film does not last too long. It's not really high-quality cinema, but otherwise little to complain about. Nice snack.

3.0*

Game movie.

This film was heaped with criticism and received little praise, and I understand that somehow. I think I like the movie better just because I never played the games. I just don't game much in general, so hypes like this always pass me by. It does ensure that I can go into it blankly.

I still love movies where the main characters travel to other dimensions via a device or portal to carry out missions, and Assassin's Creed sometimes takes full advantage of it. The worlds look beautiful, though it's a shame they've only stayed here for limited periods of time. Visually they all look beautiful, but then you hope for a little more variety.

The acting is meh. Fassbender can do little with his role and the same goes for Cotillard. In any case, the second one is far too good an actress to play in these kinds of films. Time for her to read scripts again before starting anything. Assassin's Creed is a simple popcorn movie that thinks it's very clever, but actually isn't at all.

The film's missed opportunity is that it has its finale set in the "real" world, and those action scenes are a bit less visually appealing. This film can sometimes be called brilliant with what it presents to the viewer, although it lacks some substantive support. It is too empty for a film that has quite a bit of sentimental stuff in it, but that does not mean that it remains an entertaining ride.

Good action scenes, nice concept and a playing time that is a bit on the long side but never goes overboard. When the real finale arrives, the film is disappointing, and there is a lack of variety, otherwise these kinds of films are still quite nice to watch on a rainy afternoon. This form of cinema will never be great, but in terms of entertainment they come a long way.
