Weak.

The Cat is a fairly obscure film by a more well-known filmmaker. Despite that, this is the first film by director Lam that I have had the pleasure of seeing. Unfortunately, it did not leave a pleasant first impression, but the potential is certainly there. All in all, these are not the films that suit me, and consequently, I didn't find it all that impressive.

With The Cat, Lam aims for disturbing imagery and mixes quite a few different genres and subgenres. The Cat can be viewed as a science fiction film, action film, romance film, horror film, body horror film, thriller film, and drama film. All those genres are mixed together, and although they remain reasonably balanced, it is simply too much to cram into a film of just 90 minutes.

Because the film includes so many events in the story, it is difficult to find it boring. The effects are quite decent, and the variety of monsters is certainly impressive. Unfortunately, this is a film that aims for silliness, which I am not a fan of. The theatrical acting proves to be an annoyance time and again, and the characters are given no room to stand out.

The storyline supposed to run through all the different genres is actually very simple, yet I struggled to follow the plot due to the many disturbing images. The film lacks a bit of structure. It depends on the person, of course, but these are actually the kinds of films I can't follow. A restless pace; I can enjoy it, but not in this way.

All in all, I was crazy about that cat. I love cats myself, so a film that literally features a cat as the central figure is soothing. Furthermore, thanks to the hectic approach, there wasn't a single moment that wasn't boring. For a moment, I thought the film was going to be fun, but since the film does so much and I didn't like following every path, the enjoyment eventually runs out. A film that wasn't exactly made for me, unfortunately.
