Much of the credit must go to Michael John McCracken for designing the monsters, but especially to Matthew Mungle who uses his make-up to create some very startling (and convincing) shock effects in this well-edited, suspenseful horror film. The screenplay - co-written by Joseph Stefano who wrote the screenplay for Psycho - is also much better put together than you would expect from this type of horror film. David Allen Brooks (who looks suspiciously like a young Ryan O'Neal) plays young doctor John Hollins whose mother [Kim Hunter] confesses after a near-fatal car accident that she engaged in an experiment that is horribly wrong walked. It's up to John to destroy the result of that experiment and he gets help from British scientist Melissa Leftridge [Amanda Pays]. Rod Steiger, wearing a toupee, can play as John's mentor who secretly carries out his own gruesome experiments. A technically very good horror film with a few strong twists. The role of John's girlfriend Sharon is played by Talia Balsam, the daughter of Hitchcock favorite Martin Balsam and Joyce Van Patten and future wife of George Clooney. Her role in this film may be a bit colorless, but this film certainly isn't.

This horror film should be a classic in the genre. It's been a long time since I saw such a good monster movie. The special effects are of a high standard for a B-movie and the plot is interesting, which I don't often have with horror films. It also builds up well and towards the end it goes all out with some dirty scenes. Also contains some ripped off items... how can that monster crawl into a watermelon without damaging the melon?

And yes, the 3-disc Synapse DVD/Blu Ray is very expensive at 50 euros... it is therefore limited to 3500 copies. I made the investment and it is definitely a must if you want to treat yourself to a rare release.

Reasonable film in which a scientist on her deathbed asks her son to destroy her experiment. This typical 80s horror film starts off quite original, but it is not logically developed throughout. The make-up and creatures are excellent and especially the last part has an excellent gore content.
