General Gurko Lanen came to power in 1865 thanks to a coup d'état in the Balkan state of Lichtenburg. Grand Duchess Zona, the rightful ruler, hopes for support from the French monarch Napoleon the Third. But it is the Count of Monte Cristo, her admirer, who finally offers help.
