An excellent Western about a 700-mile horse race through the beautiful Western landscape. The film starts off a bit slow, but once the race begins, it becomes increasingly captivating. Along the way, you get to know the characters better, and their relationships shift. Naturally, there are plenty of beautiful shots of the landscape and some stunning slow-motion scenes. A superb cast also rounds it out.

No, this is not a good movie.

A race against the clock is always exciting; but not in this film. I can even imagine that this film heralded the end of the Western genre. If not, it delivered the final blow. All the loose ends are tied up in this one; they're just flogging a dead horse.

An overkill of bad dialogue, unnecessary dialogue, strange scenes, unnecessary scenes, lame moralizing, lame background sketches of life, embarrassing boyishness from Coburn and Hackman, a painfully poorly typecast character, and, what's more, poorly acted! by Candice Bergen, and in between, beautiful shots of that white desert sand.

The fact that it's a race is completely lost on you because of all that in-between stuff; as a viewer, you couldn't care less... Let alone who wins; the characters don't matter either...

For a lover (not an expert) of this genre like me, this was a real eye-opener... pfff

Bite the Boulette is an impressive Western that deviates significantly from the genre with its horse racing story, referencing a true race held in 1908, right at the end of the "Old West" era. Afterward, America would be forever transformed into a unified country. No Native Americans, no real bad guys, just lots of horses... and a moped. I'm not sure the rumors about animal cruelty are true. It would be outrageous to abuse animals in a film that aims to command respect for them. But Vincent beating an animal half-conscious with his fist (the animal is visibly impressed) and Coburn's horse falling off a cliff several meters into the water , are questionable. Otherwise, it's a visual delight with plenty of beautiful scenery. Hackman and Coburn in the lead roles are not the least impressive. It's a shame the plot and dialogue are rather thin.
