Just watched this. It was a film I saw a few pages of in Panorama magazine as a teenager, and naturally became very curious about, but I never saw or heard anything more about it.

Until a while ago I came across the title of the film again and I looked it up on Amazon and lo and behold: they had it!

Well, what can I say? Can this even be considered a real film, because this is essentially a very amateurish concoction, full of beautiful people who have clearly never acted before and clearly have no talent for it.

In terms of film and story, this is supposed to be an adventure film, and the DVD cover optimistically states that it's a mix of Barbarella and Indiana Jones. But of course, it doesn't reach that level anywhere. In fact, it's practically an insult to even mention both films in the same breath as this flop!

The story is told excruciatingly slowly, full of bad dialogue, poor acting and an uninteresting storyline, so that after half an hour you feel like you've already been watching it for two hours (and then you still have more than an hour to go!).

The action scenes are ridiculously badly choreographed and come across as very clumsy and fake.

Is there absolutely nothing good about this junk?

The sets are of a decent standard and the many beautiful ladies are a feast for the eyes, in their leather suits and helmets.

Also note two actors you'll probably recognize from James Bond films: Jean Rougerie as Professor D'Arcy, who was in A View to a Kill, and in a smaller role at the beginning of the film, you'll also see Jean Rougerie, who appeared in The Spy Who Loved Me.

Furthermore, mediocre camera work and extremely dated synthesizer music as a score.

I can really only give this a low score.

A two, or 1 star.

This Just Jaeckin adaptation of a comic book character is so over-the-top that it eventually becomes enjoyable. The ending in the diamond mine is especially enjoyable. Only women live there, and for lack of peeping toms, they prefer to walk around topless. Complemented by the beautifully built protagonists Tawny Kitaen and Zabou Breitman, it delivers pleasing visuals; so much so that you can accept the film's absurdities and awkward transitions. Despite its utterly improbable story, it's an erotic adventure film with high entertainment value.

Captain Willard, with his two paranymphs, Kitaen and Breitman, journeys to the source of the river, and beyond. A good copy is better than a half-baked one, and the story is so full of quirk that it's barely noticeable. It's certainly original, from the Ben Hur race to the fights, all of which have a certain absurdity. It's also quite enjoyable to watch, with the abundance of half-naked yikyaks—and the locations are quite beautiful. It's a shame, though, that the actors are so stiff and clumsy—and apparently, as I read above, that was intentional.

It would be nice to see a remake of this, a bit more over the top and with better actors, and perhaps a bit more pace.
