For a Thai production this can be called a very strong film. When it comes to image and sound, it can finally easily compete with Western productions. Only Ong Bak 2 managed to do that so far (as far as I'm concerned, hopefully Ong Bak 3 will also succeed), but was still a bit lacking in content. Tom Yum Goong initially still looks like a typical action comedy, but of course Tony Jaa has a very strong trump card. Tony may not show his best tricks, but some of the fight scenes are finger-licking good. Especially the one in the restaurant where Tony literally fights his way up. Recorded in one take, and we can all take our hats off for that.

As usual, the film falls short in storytelling, but the most important thing is that we see Tony Jaa in all his glory. At least a decent director has been at work here who portrays the action well, making it a bit easier for us to guess what a Bruce Lee film could really have been like. Not sure why the title refers to dragons. Either it's a bad translation, or something typically Asian that I don't understand. Nice humor here and there and above all a typical police movie. You forget in an instant that this is ordinary cake when Tony sends someone flying through the room with a big kick.

Remains very impressive.

Provided you settle for the action in this movie. The acting and plot are really not good, the soundtrack is especially very generic and not very striking. It is clear that Pinkaew has wanted to spend his bahts elsewhere.

This film simply remains the superlative of Ong-Bak, a film that already managed to pack a punch with great martial arts scenes. The action cinematography is simply superb, Jaa is a real acrobat and every action scene is hit and miss.

One for the martial arts enthusiast. In terms of action almost unbeatable, the rest of the film just suffers a bit.

4.5* and a extended review
