Heavy acting from Phoenix and Witherspoon. Beautiful film couple in a biographical film about Johnny Cash. Biographical but also romantic. The film spends a lot of time detailing his tumultuous relationship with his colleague and girlfriend June Carter. The obsessive love for her, but also a childhood trauma and a distant relationship with his father, at a certain moment pulled him into the abyss, in search of life meaning. I sometimes found that focus on his relationship with Carter very dominant to almost the annoying, but it does help to better place the content of his songs. It will probably have turned out like this, but putting a marriage proposal in public is just not done in my opinion. Phoenix once again brilliant as a tormented figure : I postponed this film, which I had never seen, for far too long. Normally, Witherspoon doesn't appeal to me and I really can't name any other films of hers that I liked, but here she has been deservedly lauded.

“You can't wear black. It looks like you're going to a funeral.”
“Maybe I am...”
Superb movie. I'm always up for a film about Johnny Cash and his wonderful repertoire, and when everything comes together so well, it's a lot of fun. The biggest compliment has to be given to Joaquin Phoenix, who is completely absorbed in the role of Johnny Cash, and who perfectly portrays the 'man in black'. The cradle-to-grave approach is chosen and while that doesn't always work, it's almost essential here to really understand the problems with drugs and his father.
Reese Witherspoon also deserves all the credit and you feel June Carter's love for Cash, but also the frustration at his immaturity and the demons he carries with him. Witherspoon has something very upbeat and cheerful about him, but can also show Carter's tough side. When Phoenix and Witherspoon sing "It Ain't Me, Babe" together in front of a large crowd, goosebumps fill your arms. The zeitgeist is very well portrayed by director James Mangold, and it is nice to see actors who play Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis, among others. Walk The Line is infectious and is a wonderful film.

Well-made film, but ultimately quite predictable. Yet another rise and fall (with redemption at the end - why am I putting this in spoiler tags?), some addictions, fights et cetera. The film doesn't really surprise, sometimes drags a bit, doesn't always captivate. But the acting, certainly by both protagonists, can be there and lifts this biopic above the average. Also excellent as an atmospheric portrait and the decoration and especially the music finish it off. Certainly a sufficient one, not the top film that this film has been bombed into. 3.0*.
