Filmmaker Parvez Sharma is a professed Muslim and gay. To fulfill his religious duty, he goes on a hajj to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, one of the most repressive countries in the world, where homosexuals can be whipped or the death penalty. “Saudi Arabia is the spirit of Islam,” Sharma said. “An Islam of fear.” A rather nerve-wracking destination. Moreover, Sharma cannot resist filming – strictly prohibited in the kingdom. It provides an account of his visit to the holiest city of the Muslims and the bizarre world of pilgrimage. Right next to the Great Mosque with the Kaaba is a gigantic shopping center. The old shrines have disappeared due to new construction or, if the orthodox Saudis disapprove, destroyed.
