François Le Gardeur returns to Canada after completing his law studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. However, he refuses to live with his bourgeois family again. However, at the urging of his friend Owashak, he returns to his family in Québec. He arrives too late, his father has just died three days ago and he leaves him an inheritance that will do him more harm than good. In addition, François meets Marie-Loup, a young woman with a bad reputation.
