Too bad I couldn't get into this movie.

It seems to me to be a fine film, but I can't get in touch with the actors.

It's a pity. That's why I don't rate it. Don't let my opinion scare you because you might just love the movie!

Tried this movie many years ago, and it was not a success. I didn't like it much, but afterwards I had the feeling that I hadn't been in the film for a moment and hadn't given the film a chance. So a rethink was only a matter of time.

Oil, oil and more oil. It is the black gold and the trade in it that determines. It determines who pulls the strings, who takes up positions, who becomes a prince, who has to die and above all who makes the profit. Enough interesting you would say, something that does not come out enough in the film. Recognizable is the greatest distance from the culture in the oil states and the equally well-known treatment of immigrant workers.

But despite the shadows, the extensive story for which the time is taken and the broad cast, the story does not come across and the film lacks any form of tension. At least the soundtrack is nice and especially Mark Strong stands out with a good performance. But that's about it for the good stuff. Syriana is such a typical film that probably looked good on the drawing board but lacks a lot in the execution. Syriana is therefore a film that can and will soon be forgotten in that regard.

A political thriller about conflicts in the Middle East. Or conflicts with the Middle East. How America is mixing the Persian Gulf in order to extract oil. If it makes more oil and money with another leader at the head, they'll send that too. Internally, the country is in conflict with its own corruption and the extreme religious response to it as an alternative. Politics, capitalism and religion in a dangerous cocktail.

Stephen Gaghan previously won awards with the script of the drug film Traffic. He doesn't immediately seek out the sensation in Syriana, but that also means there is less action, of course. Unfortunately, he can't always absorb it well by building atmosphere. The film also has many storylines and characters, causing the focus to shift regularly. Gradually it will come together of course, but you have to keep your head. But he does show that there are no good characters in the whole story, or hardly at all.

Syriana is also the film that secured the only actor Oscar to date from George Clooney. Not a bad role, but I don't see what's so special about that role. So don't focus too much on that merit to see the film.
