9 Songs is set in London during the fall of 2003. Lisa is an American who studies in London for a year. Matt, a scientist who studies glaciers, meets her at a rock concert at Brixton Academy and falls in love with her. The film follows their intimate and physical relationship and features music from concerts they attend together: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Von Bondies, Elbow, Primal Scream, The Dandy Warhols, Super Furry Animals, Franz Ferdinand and Michael Nyman.

Another film that is totally snowed under 
. But after 9 Songs and Code 46 Winterbottom leaves me a very strong impression.
It's a shame that a taboo around sex continues to exist, you notice it again with a film like this. The main theme here is not sex, but a relationship between a couple. Designed on the basis of a few music scenes, just as many explicit sex scenes and short atmospheric drawings of their being together.
But the relationship takes precedence. That this takes shape through the sex scenes is as normal a choice as shaping a relationship through other things. But that is of course much deeper. As far as I'm concerned, Winterbottom succeeds in perfecting the nature and progress in the sex scenes with verve. Each has its place, and belongs to a certain moment in the relationship.
A big plus is the realistic approach. No prudish, stiff or clinically styled shots, but nicely juicy, passionate and warmly portrayed. Speaking of eroticism or porn is therefore completely missing the essence, I think. I don't think there is any point in trying to induce "pants down" horniness. To represent the passion between two people, and this time not by having them have endless conversations, or by burdening them with romantic sacrifice.
Also one of those few films that manages to make the music, which sounds to me like crap music, work functionally and well. Not my thing, but in the end it fits well into the film, and forms an atmospheric guideline.
Unique film that shows the juicy, fleshy and warm nature of a relationship. I don't mind other approaches to relationships, but to dismiss them as deep and this one as superficial is lame. Beautiful and touching film, conjured up on the screen with a lot of love and passion.
4 well deserved *. Grossly underrated here.

I think director Winterbottom couldn't decide whether he wanted to make a concert film, a soft porn film or a documentary about an expedition to Antarctica... There are a few good bands like Franz Ferdinand, but otherwise it's not exciting at all, unless you like soft soft "porn" .. Weak story and the dialogues mainly consist of aaahw and oeeehh

Explicit sex scenes punctuated by rock music and a trip to Antarctica. Director Winterbottom wants to say something about a short but powerful relationship, but does not get any further than sex and very short interactions. It's all very superficial and Matt and Lisa are some flat and boring characters. The actors O'Brien and Stiley do what is asked of them but can do little with such a weak script. Sex and fun rock music, that's not a bad combination. To end on a positive note.
