It took me about fifteen minutes before I got used to the somewhat old-fashioned film, and then it took at least another half hour before the film really loosened up a bit. But in the end this turned out to be a quite successful noir, based on a work by the somewhat underestimated Patrick Hamilton. George Anton is a very nasty man, who completely dominates his wife (Ingrid Bergman) in a somewhat complicated crime plan and manipulates her into a nervous breakdown. The acting is a bit on the heavy side, but for a film This is not unusual from that time, and it is not really disturbing. And ultimately the film also depends on the atmosphere: a setting in Victorian London where it always seems dark and foggy, and a dark claustrophobic atmosphere in which Ingrid Bergman is half locked up and is psychologically terrorized by Anton. It could have been a bit more compact, but this is still a fine classical work.

Good film in which a newly married woman returns to the house where her aunt was murdered. A well-constructed story with a fascinating psychological game. It is a bit repetitive, so the film could have been a bit shorter. But this is made up for by the excellent acting, which was also Angela Lansbury's debut.

After being introduced to the expression 'gaslighting' in an article on the internet this week, I decided to dedicate an evening to its source, this film. A nice way to expand your cultural vocabulary .
For me it is a good, slow, under-the-skin psychological thriller with very good performances by the trio Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman and Josheph Cotton. Kudos also to the servants at the Boyer house (of which Angela Lansbury is still alive at the time of this writing, imagine). Charles Boyer plays the role of a huge creep that you as a viewer would like to strangle with your bare hands. So mission accomplished. Ingrid Bergman plays the role of a confused bird with verve, also very strong. Joseph Cotton appears less often, but also gives a good performance.
Bergman's final speech in the film gave me goosebumps, which doesn't happen to me easily, and so chapeau for this very old film.
Direction by Cukor and photography by Joseph Ruttenberg are superb. It is wonderful to wander through the dark, misty streets of gas-lit London from a previous era. I wouldn't have guessed it right away, but this film was shot entirely in the studio.

This Gaslight is a remake of the British film Gaslight (1940), which is apparently also of a very high standard, so give it a watch.
