Primer plot

"What happens if it actually works?"

Four men in a garage. In the evenings they are busy with a complicated construction. They speak enthusiastically about a possible patent, but first the prototype must become stable. It is not entirely clear what their invention entails. Maybe they don't know it too well themselves, because they seem surprised by the side effects of their device. But those side effects point to something much bigger than they could ever have imagined. Suddenly the stakes of their work are increased exponentially and the friendship comes under pressure.

Continues to enjoy.

Primer hasn't lost much of its strength yet. It wasn't a film that had to rely on effects or specific time-bound (hah) issues anyway, so aging wasn't really in it in that regard.

The soundtrack remains a huge asset, but especially the fact that you can test blackbox together with a number of people without worrying much about the science behind it is great. They don't even know how it works, which makes it a lot more realistic.

Also the lack of real drama (only about the last fifteen minutes) and the down-to-earth approach of the entire film (not wanting to show off with some effects at the end) do Primer well. Furthermore, after a few viewings it all feels quite logical and easy to follow, although I must admit that afterwards I can never really explain how the fork is in the stem. When I look at certain diagrams online I don't think I want to know either.

4.5* and a extended review

At times intriguing, at times completely uninteresting. I couldn't really bother with the unclear things, I was aware beforehand that Primer had a certain Lynch content in terms of narrative. But in general this is a bit too changeable while the theme of time travel is very nice. The atmosphere with the accompanying technical chatter was also put down well. Well, I think a little more structure would have done the film better.

Primer has to be the most incomprehensible movie I've ever seen. It's delivered very uninteresting and it's a lot of technical talk but it all seems not to be cohesive. I wondered until about halfway through what the hell they were talking about. Conversations also jump from one place to another, scenes are cut short so that when you get used to the new environment, you're already in the next one. It makes Primer very difficult to follow and really doesn't really captivate a single moment. Furthermore, it is filmed rather jerky with some standard camera, which gives a very grainy image. Fairly amateurish in my eyes, but some will undoubtedly find this genius.
