Mingus: Charlie Mingus 1968 plot

When a film crew wants to shoot a documentary about the legendary jazz double bassist Charles Mingus, they run into him at a bad time in his life. Threatened with eviction from his beloved New York loft and persistent debts, they find a nihilistic and depressed man, who sometimes tenderly expresses his love for his daughter and then again shoots his bile on society as a whole.

Not a true documentary or concert film of the jazz legend, but a snapshot and intimate conversation with Mingus in the company of his daughter. The timing wasn't chosen at random, though. We see Mingus in 1966 (the title says 1968, but that's the year of release, not recording) as he's about to be evicted from his apartment. By 1966, Mingus was already a household name with a slew of albums, concerts, music, and more, yet he couldn't pay his rent and was simply thrown out onto the street. This gives the documentary a surreal quality. We see a captivating and sincere conversation with the man about his past, as he plays excerpts from his music, but we also see the man behind the legend as he plays with his daughter and, unfortunately, is also at the beginning of a dark period. It would be several years before Mingus would pick up the threads of his life again.
