This film tells the story of 3 cousins, who grow up as brothers, (Miklo, Paco and Cruz) who are sitting in a 'hallway'. When Cruz is attacked and paralyzed, someone is accidentally killed in an act of revenge. Miklo goes to prison, where he gains status with a prison gang, while Paco joins the narcotics brigade via the army. After 9 years they meet again, but now they are on different sides of the law.

Of the films from the top 250 that I really don't like, I can often understand why others think they are good. I find it just as hard to understand with this one as with The Boondock Saints, Mainly because it just isn't good of its kind either. Chapa but also Burrego are really dramatically bad actors. Chapa strikes me as an office clerk with a gym membership and some gangster fantasy. . The film is full of predictable cliches, as soon as that boy comes into the picture you already know that he is going to die, because innocence always has to die in these kinds of films The film also does not indicate the time at all, so you never get the feeling that we are in the 70s and 80s. Furthermore, the film is mercilessly sentimental by emphasizing a number of dramatic moments almost to the extreme and the race element is worked out so simplistically that it almost becomes funny. I really want to see the whole list from this site. And this was not the movie I was most looking forward to due to the rating of others on this site and the length. Unfortunately they were right. Hackford is a decent director of mainstream movies and while it's been a long time I have pretty fond memories of Dolores Claiborne and The Devils Advocate, but he makes this movie so long that I lost interest in the last hour. Also find him boring.

Blood in, blood out... A top250 film with a lot of conflicting opinions. You love it or you hate it. But the fans are definitely there for this cult film. I just don't belong there. It looks like a crime movie where various gangs make the streets unsafe. Especially the envy and the urge to be the most influential makes for a relentless struggle. Internally, brotherhood, friendship and loyalty are central to this.
So in itself a good starting point were it not that I found the starting point very limited. Much has been written about the acting performances, but they can only be endorsed. Pretty poor and unbelievable, even to the point of laughing. For a moment I thought it had to do with the broken English of the Latinos, but it went further than that. When emotions had to be played, many fell by the wayside.
The effect of the fighting was also meager. Just think of the knife stabs, for example. But the plot was also poorly developed. Three hours for something that presents itself as an epic is excruciatingly long. Despite the lousy acting performances, I still found the first 45 minutes quite decent, where the friendship is central. The long part in prison, on the other hand, pretty much catapults you into another movie with little affinity with the rest of the movie. The fact that afterwards the two protagonists are each on the other side of the law did not make things better.
So disappointing. This isn't much more than a B-movie. In nothing to compare with several other top crime films.
