Stella Raphael is an educated, elegant but troubled young woman who lives with her husband Max, a forensic psychiatrist, and her son Charlie in a mental hospital in rural England. Stella is dissatisfied with her husband and her life. She comes into contact with the attractive sculptor Edgar Stark and gradually falls in love with him.
