"Love thy neighbor as thyself."
Young teen Bo is too sensitive to handle pressure at his boarding school. The headmaster is a cold, religious man who does not understand the feelings of his students. Bo slowly becomes lonely. Until he finds support from the headmaster's son, Kim. The boys develop a very close bond and eventually even a relationship.

Wonderful 1970s film, with boys with (too) long hair, discussions with authoritarian teachers, a school strike and a blossoming love between two boys, 14-year-old Bo and 11-year-old Kim. That is also what the title refers to, to encourage boys with homosexual feelings. And in that respect, the film (or Denmark at the time) is way ahead: they get sex education and homosexuality is not taboo. So I don't understand the comments here, who think this film is outdated. A remake would be great for all those Muslim youths who don't dare come out of the closet.
The film is not preachy or moralistic, rather light-hearted. The young people are having a great time. Not much of the synopsis here is correct. Written by someone who hasn't seen the movie. Bo is more likely to lead Kim, not the other way around. And of course it is mainly about sex, because that is what young people of that age are talking about. A quiet film, pleasant to watch and courageous for its time.

The film shows that even the shielded environment of a boarding school is not capable of holding back the sexual development of young people or guiding it in the desired direction. The efforts of the strict and intellectual school board seem to have the opposite effect. This is the content of the film, in my opinion.
In any case, directors Ernst Johansens and Lasse Nielsens did not have a selective view when making their film, but a very naturalistic one. And that is a positive observation. In the boarding school it does not matter at all whether someone is homosexual or heterosexual. The film does not pass judgment, but simply shows in a sensitive way how the various characters in the film behave. Some are rebellious. Others timid. And still others offensive. They have one thing in common. They are all insecure and are all pushing their limits. Well, you look for very surprising insights in this film in vain.
The film would be quite explicit in certain scenes. I thought that was okay. Most of all I saw a lot of self-examination, affection and tenderness. Nothing to get excited about. The film offers no new insights. No shocking scenes. Actually, I didn't find the movie very interesting. A bit on the boring side even. And also rather messy staged and without appealing characters. I would have liked to see a little more roundness in the characters and a little more line in the story. No, not impressed.
