Blurp is working on a series of films about conflict journalism. Inevitably, this one had to be revised. Maybe not the most spectacular film, but quite credible and with a very strong atmosphere.

Gibson plays one of his better roles - the air of naivety that hangs over him is nicely balanced with the occasional Mad Max and Lethal Weapon traits that seep through, and he doesn't lapse into too many strange traits and mannerisms as he did later. Weaver is also in her place, somewhere nicely between femme fatale, aimless love interest and mysterious woman. And Linda Hunt of course, well cast and strongly developed - you can question whether she is such a good actress, but she plays this role incredibly well.

I cannot blame the film for the fact that the intrigue surrounding Sukarno and the PKI is somewhat marginally underexposed, in fact - we see the story through the eyes of Hamilton, who certainly does not understand anything at all, at least not at the beginning, and has no insight into the somewhat inaccessible state of affairs in Indonesia, despite the lesson with the Wajang.

Beautiful film! I found in this case the romance of Jill and Guy added something to the already sultry whole. The scene with the two in the rain is very well done. Furthermore beautiful pictures of Indonesia and an interesting story, 3.5*.

Political thriller set in Indonesia on the eve of the communist massacres of 1965-1966. An Australian journalist is sent to Jakarta to report on events in a then very unstable country with anti-Western sentiments. He is taken under the wing of Billy Kwan, a mysterious character with powerful connections, and develops a soft spot for another female journalist.
Although you shouldn't expect much big action, the solid plot is carried well by Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver and especially Linda Hunt, who plays a remarkable role as a man. Bizarre that they didn't just choose a Chinese actor instead of a female dwarf. In any case, she was generously rewarded for it. Although I didn't find the romance with Weaver that necessary, it does work, especially when Gibson betrays her trust. The unrest is increased by the prominently present military personnel who are literally everywhere. Anyone familiar with history knows that all this will end with an unprecedented and cruel witch hunt for the communists... a stain on the history of this country. The film was therefore shot in the Philippines and banned by the Suharto regime.
