Doctor Foster plot

Doctor Gemma Foster is a woman who has everything under control. She is a talented and respected family doctor and the center of her village – a woman people trust and a loving mother. Then she suspects her husband Simon of having an affair and is determined to find out the truth. But how far is she willing to go and what other deceit does she expose? With her research, Gemma disrupts her own life and the lives of her patients and her family. She behaves in a way she never thought possible. Does her attempt to get to grips with the situation eventually lead her to lose everything she loves?

Doctor Foster season 1

Suddenly, a happily married doctor discovers that her marriage is based on a lie. Who is she herself when her husband sets up a network of lies to hide his preference for a younger woman!? Doctor Foster' (2015) is a wonderfully villainous sketch of morals, in which Gemma Foster (Suranne Jones) has to play various social roles in order to stand up for her own interests. A bit like the big transformation roles of troubled family men like Walter White or Tony Soprano. But now with a female protagonist who has a higher social function than her husband and who therefore forms the main breadwinner. In that sense it also produces a different kind of dynamic because Gemma Foster discovers how much her identity depends on that male other and less on her own merits. Each episode she changes from a self-effacing gray mouse to someone who even uses her doctor's privileges to get things done. Because Gemma Foster may have the expectations of her environment against her, but she can retaliate mercilessly with the power she does have. Highly satisfying when she does!
