Trois Couleurs: Bleu plot

The first part of Kieślowski's trilogy based on the colors of the French flag and the slogans of the French Revolution focuses on the theme of freedom. That's the freedom of Julie (Juliette Binoche), when the rest of her family is killed in a car accident. Determined to banish the past, she moves into a new existence. That is not so easy, however. Her husband was a composer and was working on a European hymn. The sounds of this work continue to resound. His assistant tries to persuade Julie to complete the project together. Once again, she is overtaken by the past when she discovers that her husband had a mistress. Julie will have to accept that absolute freedom is an empty pursuit.

Not uninteresting, but this movie didn't really captivate me either. I found the first half hour especially difficult to get through.

The symbolism was way too thick. Every now and then I had the idea that you could hear Kieslowski screaming in the background: 'And with this I show what her emotion is at the moment!'

The second part, on the other hand, was a lot more interesting. 3 stars.

Finally got to watch this movie. The story of a woman who loses her husband and child and leaves everything behind to start a new life. A new life so as not to face the suffering she has to deal with. But you can't escape something like that. The past is not a chapter that you can turn at a glance.

Juliette Binoche carries the film without a problem. A fascinating figure in a beautiful film full of blue and melancholy. You can see that the smile on her face is a mask. Life goes on. There's a bit of a pinch there too. The ending is a little too easy. There I expected the shock moment more. If the step to mourn has been taken after all. Or rather take away the fear of the past.

Looking forward to the rest of this trilogy. The link with the French flag and symbols is hard to find. But it was still an impetus for this beautiful film.

Beautifully filmed with a nice soundtrack, but also quite distant. As a result, the film was not constantly and completely captivated. It is mainly a character study but always zooms in on less interesting aspects. And the film may have as its title Blue, really consistent, but the maker was not able to bring out that color (Kechiche did that better in his film anyway). Sometimes there is suddenly a piece of blue, like at that swimming pool, and then nothing for a long time. 3.0*.
