more quarters fall when re-examined. it's a strong film with a strong message. that becomes clear (to me) when I dwell on this again. but also the humor and the details stand out more and are better.

but what struck me the most: I sometimes got a beer in between and put the film on pause after the dialogues. what beautiful shots we get!

what we apparently easily ignore, this is art.

Beautiful parody of the films from the fifties. The story is unimportant and only serves to connect the separate scenes. The separate scenes have nothing to do with each other, but indicate what was considered important at the time. Movies about cowboys, Romans, the Bible and dance movies. Here's another one with dancing sailors. Delicious nonsense.

And nagging directors are mocked. And demanding stars and gossip journalists.

But also beautiful images. In the beginning that huge line of people and the beautiful lighting as you had with Romans films and Bible films. I am old enough to have seen those movies with my parents in the cinema.

The controller is the connecting factor who constantly has to solve problems, but cannot do without this fantasy world, because he refuses a quiet, well-paid job.

It looks like the actors enjoyed their roles. Just look at the final scene where Clooney acts full of fire and says the last word wrong.

I entered this film without any idea what to expect (well, apart from the Coen-like atmosphere), and I am pleasantly surprised. Sadly low score here, though I understand. Hail, Caesar! is quite unconventional, doesn't really follow a plot (which doesn't mean it lacks coherence, because Brolin's character provides the red line) and might come across as strange for lack of a better word. But I was nevertheless pretty comfortable with it from the start, and I don't often get that with a Coen Brothers movie. The atmosphere of 50s Hollywood is very nice, and visually it is a very beautiful film. Beautiful warm use of color. And what kind of cast is gathered here. Nice rolls one by one (except for the 20 second roll of Jonah Hill maybe, why is he even on the poster..). Especially Brolin as the 'glue' that holds everything together plays a strong role, and I was also very charmed by the supporting role of Scarlett Johansson, who can play a rather funny role. Apart from the atmosphere and visual pageantry, it is above all a very fine actor's film.

The humor doesn't always land, but fortunately for the most part it does (Ehrenreich's character who doesn't get his way due to the director's frustration!). In any case, it is typical Coen humor, in fact you already know in advance whether you will appreciate it or not if you are familiar with their style. If I have to mention one minus, it's the "main storyline" around the abducted Clooney and the communists, which I found to be the least interesting part of the film. As far as I'm concerned, that should have even been let out and instead more random scenes with the supporting roles, because I undoubtedly liked those the most. The love of the film really pops off the screen in all these scenes, and the film as a whole is a truly beautiful ode to cinema. Thick 3.5*.
