Palindromes plot
Just as a palindrome is a word or word connection that can also be read from back to front and continue to mean the same, Solondz describes the life of 12-year-old Aviva (also readable from back to front). In this film, there are many Avivas - she is played by a toddler, two adult women, a boy and a few teenagers - who live in a world where decisions have to be made every second, either by herself or her alter egos. A dark take on American family values. With Solondz's characteristic black humor, issues such as suicide, abortion, religion and loneliness in the suburbs are reviewed.
