Entertaining finger exercise.

Caine, in particular, gives a good performance as the artist who must continue on without a breadwinner. The story remains somewhat mysterious, which maintains the suspense but is also its weakest point. It all feels like an overlong Twilight Zone episode, albeit one directed and written by Stone, who would only truly become a sensation later. Nevertheless, this is an entertaining exercise.

Reasonable.

As a teenager, I found this a rather unusual horror/drama film whose story captivated me and even, at times, I found thrilling. This is mainly due to the compelling atmosphere, the frequently dark imagery, and Michael Caine's performance.

The original story is quite well-crafted, and the same goes for its execution, including the aforementioned atmosphere and visuals. The scenes involving the hand were quite good and exciting, and beautifully shot. Michael Caine, as book artist Jonathan Lansdale, who loses his right hand (and, in fact, his personality as well, as he becomes rather dark after the accident) in a car accident, did a rather commendable job, and I'd love to see him in films as well. The rest of the cast also performed well.

Just a fun, unique horror/drama film that I thoroughly enjoyed as a teenager. It's really time to rewatch this one, as it's been quite a while since I've seen it.

Director Oliver Stone's second horror film boasts a strong first fifteen minutes, building an interesting premise with underlying psychological underpinnings. After that, The Hand lays its cards on the table more clearly (and even clumsily in terms of special effects). As soon as this body part appears on screen, the viewer immediately notices how little fear it inspires. A runaway rubber projectile stuck to the throats of its victims is shown far too clearly, sometimes to the point of comicality. Stone delivers some intense moments and enjoys an excellent Michael Caine, but once the ending appears on screen, it's completely clear that it's all just a half-baked story.
