Nice. Great acting from Washington and Snipes. Great soundtrack. A bit long, though, and the ending is slammed through. Too bad.

A decent film about a trumpet player and his band performing in a Brooklyn cafe. It's a portrait of a man whose work, art, and music take precedence over everything else, and the main character is portrayed well. Beautiful cinematography, a lovely jazzy soundtrack, and the overall atmosphere is reminiscent of a Spike Lee joint. Unfortunately, the film sometimes lacks focus and drags on for too long.

Seen on SkyShowtime. Early Spike Lee joint starring himself and Denzel.

We follow Bleek (Washington), who, from a young age, was pushed by his mother to play the trumpet. Twenty years later, he plays in his own band, "The Bleek Gilliam Quartet." It consists of saxophonist Shadow (Snipes) and manager Giant (Lee), among others. A rivalry between Bleek and Shadow becomes apparent early on, with Shadow selfishly pushing for long solo sessions. Money also plays a major role, later causing friction within the band. There's also a rivalry regarding women. Meanwhile, Giant gambles away all his money and gets deeper and deeper into debt with the wrong people.

Strong performances by Washington, Snipes, and Lee. Samuel L. Jackson has a small role as a tough guy who breaks a few fingers. Jazz fans will definitely get their money's worth.
