Natural Born Latinos

Very violent film with lots of sex. Well, that was clearly De La Iglesia's intention, because the subversive violence is constantly portrayed as erotic: Perdita and Romeo get horny from it. Ironic that De La Iglesia, who wanted to conquer the American market with this film, just failed to reap success. Americans love violence in films, but if you dare to cross the line, it doesn't work anymore.

The violence is often so extreme that it becomes humor, especially when a genius Bardem is shaking during bloody Santeria rituals. In contrast to Natural Born Killers (1.5*) this is very stylish and very nice to see where Stone's film looked hideous and arty farty. Narratively it is a bit of a shame that Dolorosa has become the central figure of the film and Perdita something of a sidekick. Why not the other way around given the title? In any case I really thought it was a crazy wild ride of a film.

Mediocre film in which a man and a woman kidnap two young people to ritually murder. The story is on the weak side and does not matter. The two main characters are interesting, but more could have been done (this despite two good roles by Rosy Perez and Javier Bardem). Furthermore a fair amount of violence and too monotonous. Just under 3.0 stars.

After seeing Mutant Action, Bella Trista de Trompeta and Witching and Bitching from this crazy Spaniard... now an older American/Mexican cult film of his, where he got his inspiration from Natural Born Killers and Robert Rodriguez. That was also coming in 1997.

Still with the younger Javier Bardem, who here plays a charming bank robber alias cult member named Romeo. He picks up his sweetheart Perdita and then goes on a robbery spree. At least... It seems as if Ilglesia first invented the elements and his suspected inspirations from Robert Rodriguez and then a plot line. Because suddenly Romeo is also at home in dealing with corpses and fetuses. (Yuk!) After the couple has fled America, they kidnap a young couple, who they can use for the Voodoo rituals in their cult. That goes a bit differently when competitors appear on the scene who have a bone to pick with Romeo and Perdita.

Perdita Durango manages to be a crazy and quite fun Natural Born Killers rip off. Perhaps even more so with its plot holes and the fact that Romeo and Perdita are suddenly quite gentle towards the young couple they were originally going to use for a gruesome slaughter ritual. A few nice action scenes, absurd moments, crazy characters, wonderful adolescent humor that police chief who gets blown by a flabby administration while he holds a picture of a model in front of him, the flashbacks of that one teenage guy, that children's party and a solid dose of political incorrectness. Good entertainment!

4.0*
