“You want change without sacrifice, you want peace without struggle. The world doesn't work that way.”

Divergent was an entertaining film, but Insurgent was a big disappointment. Allegiant is somewhere in between and shares the same strengths and weaknesses as its two predecessors. The film is visually stunning and the ruined Chicago and the new cutting-edge Bureau of Genetic Welfare come to life beautifully.

The acting performances are certainly not bad and vary from good (Woodley, Watts (obviously), Daniels and Teller) to adequate (James and Elgort). As a final plus I mention the action scenes because they look very strong. Unfortunately, the story feels so empty, messy and far-fetched that you're never really comfortable in the movie. A lot is explained and the film wants to convey a message, but it remains a Young Adult film, which means that there must also be a lot of other unnecessary things in it. This makes the story feel like a neglected child. But as a dazzling action adventure with a lot of momentum, beautiful cinematography and fun actors, Allegiant is certainly a success. And I'm looking forward to the last part.

Well.

Meanwhile, I feel like I've seen this so much already. The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner are too similar in structure and story. In addition, these series are invariably spread over several films, something that only works well if you are also fascinated by the story.

This third part again reveals a lot of the story, but whoever has seen this sort of thing before knows that "not everything is as it seems". Etc etc etc. Do not spoiler the plot further, but whoever is watching this film with surprise has probably not seen many films yet.

The sci-fi is a bit dull, the acting is poor and the plot is not captivating. It's a shame because the set-up of these films is quite large and there is really potential in them. If it had been worked out a bit more seriously, it would have been easy to make something out of it. In other words, missed opportunity.

1.5*
