Zvenigora plot

A boy whose grandfather used to tell him traditional stories about a treasure that must be hidden, spends his entire childhood looking for that treasure. However, when he can't seem to find him, he leaves as a young adult for Paris, where he sells tickets to rich people to witness his own suicide. He eventually returns to Ukraine and becomes a revolutionary.
