Excellent film about a family from Europe who immigrate to America to build a better life. Not really a story, but the family is portrayed very well. A film about changing times (as the introduction of television beautifully illustrates here). The film is set in the late 1940s and is beautifully styled and made with a great sense of nostalgia. Beautiful music by Randy Newman.

A sequence of Levinson's autobiographical memories of his childhood in a Jewish family in Baltimore in the late 1940s. A funny detail is that Elijah Wood actually portrays the young Levinson. There is no story per se... it is an account of the integration difficulties the Krichinsky family faced in an America where the "American Dream" was still within reach. The tradition of Thanksgiving, the Americanization of their Jewish family name, the language barrier at school, the introduction to television, the willingness to become entrepreneurs, etc. The only major drawback is that Levinson, strangely enough, leans towards caricatured, whining Jews who say the same thing ten times and are constantly talking about money. Sometimes quite irritating, but a strongly acted film with a great portrayal of that era.
