BB #12

The gas station attendant always knocks twice

A beautiful, poetic opening with words of praise for the RN-7, accompanied by a fine and, for the time, perhaps also nice original image. A whole bunch of beautiful old trucks, old Art Nouveau buildings, summery landscapes, all in fine, sharp black and white. And BB, of course.

Comparisons with TPART are perhaps justified; the plot seems practically plagiarized, especially from the '46 version which I have never seen. Perhaps a bit more innocent than the '81 version with Jack Nicholson.

I don't actually agree entirely with the official interpretation (well, what it says on Wikipedia about what Variety wrote about it at the time); for me, this film *does* have everything to achieve cult status in arthouse circles. After all, all the elements are there, and even more than in the '81 version. But above all else, the visuals are (now!) unprecedentedly authentic and original.

For me, the best BB movie of the first 12.
