The movie that gave me sleepless nights as a child. And after many years looking back on this, I still get it. Because yes, The Witches is clearly a children's film, but it does contain some scary moments. Dare to say that the movie is scarier than a lot of horror movies. More atmospheric anyway! For example, the opening scene in which Grandma tells the story of a girl she knew is fantastic. Very magical and yet very creepy. Secretly, this opener is perhaps the best moment in the entire film. And then Anjelica Huston hasn't even appeared on the scene yet, guess what. Because the scene in which she addresses her subjects in a hotel hall is also nothing short of brilliant. The Witches is exciting, adventurous, witty and at times terrifying. In many ways the perfect children's film.

Okay, there are some downsides. For example, protagonist Jasen Fisher starts to get bored very quickly, he is a somewhat annoying actor. Partly because of his play, partly because Luke is just a bit of a drab character. But the film's biggest flaw is the ending. To the horror of many - including author Roald Dahl - they gave a rather bonkers happy ending to the film, in which Luke becomes a child again thanks to a good witch. A good witch, who suddenly loses her faith in a completely unbelievable way, literally from one moment to the next. Completely unnecessary ending, unfortunately. Anyway, still no reason not to set up the film or show it to your offspring. As far as I'm concerned, this is even mandatory for every child. Just like Roald Dahl's book. And actually all of Dahl's books.

4 stars.

Good film in which a boy is told a story about witches from his grandmother. For a children's film, the film contains quite a few rather gloomy moments. The second half is quite adventurous, and therefore the best. The make-up looks great and the camera work is good too. Anjelica Huston is well cast as the chief witch.
