Casshern plot

"When a hero falls a legend will rise"

Somewhere in the 21st century. The Great War, which lasted 50 years, has ended in favor of the Eastern Federation, at the expense of Europe. But the victory has a bitter aftertaste, as the protracted chemical, biological and nuclear war has exhausted the country and exposed the population to disease and mutations. The brilliant professor Azuma comes up with a solution: he wants to grow a new, clean human being by means of a biological process. His proposals are rejected by the responsible bureaucrats. Meanwhile, there are uprisings by rebels who are resisting the rulers of the Eastern Federation.

It doesn't surprise me to read that Casshern is a film adaptation of an anime. You feel that right away, but actually I don't think all those live action adaptations are worth it. I already had that with Space Battleship Yamato. It can be fun and interesting, but these kinds of epic stories deserve an anime and not a half-baked adventure movie with ugly CGI.

Casshern is a tough one. A very heavy duty. The story is super viscous in the first part, but the effects make it a love it or hate it thing. Most people go for the hate it. Sometimes it's nice, like with the first attack of the robots, but for the most part it's mainly about laughing. In 2004 it was really no longer possible. It is reminiscent of the games of the first playstation somewhere in the mid-nineties. I have to say that once you get used to the green screens and the story gets going, it's not that bad and then you find out that Casshern has quite a bit to offer, but in the current market this film rightly loses.

Nice review.

I had a bit of a hard head about it, because the first time I didn't like the CG too much. But in this case, time makes the technical incompetence stand out less sharply against films from the same era, giving Casshern's aesthetic even more the upper hand. And that's still a big win for me.

Some scenes still look really great. Kiriya is therefore someone who keeps the film visually interesting for 140 minutes with a lot of flair and many filters. There is quite a bit of plot in it, but the plot never gets the upper hand and the visual never backs down. Rarely seen in a film of this length.

Actors are decent, although they have simple roles. The story is very packed together, Kiriya has to lose a whole story arc in 140 minutes, but that ensures that there is always enough pace and he visually manages to pack a lot of things in one film. Those who prefer character development and nicely worked out plots will probably be less happy.

I actually liked the movie better when revised. fun visual rollercoaster with some memorable moments. Too bad Kiriya doesn't make them more often.

4.5* and a extended review

Exhausting. Actually, this is just Marvel in Japanese. The excess of kitschy CGI, clunky melodrama and flashy visuals prevent me from expressing myself enthusiastically. However, the eclectic style of medieval (castles), steampunk and science-fiction still works reasonably well. It's meant to be a superhero movie in the first place (hear the epic tunes swell); underlying the criticism against fascism is obvious. I also see a creation story here that is painfully out of control due to genetics tinkering. Some positives, but also negatives that weigh too heavily.
