Just like The Curse, a cheap horror film that starts well, then gets bogged down in boredom, only to become pretty nasty in the final minutes. The film reminded me of Oliver Stone's debut, The Hand, where a hand also starts to lead a life of its own. The acting, otherwise, isn't much to speak of. Still, I find it slightly better than the first Curse film.

The Curse: 2*

The Curse II : 2.5*

Just a bit better and more entertaining than the first The Curse film, if you ask me. Actually, I can't compare the two, because they are two standalone films.
In the States, Shout! Factory released this in a duo pack with the first film. Unfortunately, I still don't have a region-free player, but nowadays quite a few (low-budget) 80s horrors can be found on YouTube. Some are of abominable quality, but there is a pretty good version of this film available. For those interested: if you search for The Curse 2 The Bite, it comes up as the first search result.

But now, on to the movie. Due to a vague experiment by the government/military, snakes are starting to behave differently. Jill Schoelen and J. Eddie Peck play a teenage couple who have to deal with this peculiar plague.
Clark (Peck) gets bitten and his arm starts a life of its own as a snake and eventually takes over the entire body.
The interplay between Schoelen and Peck is acceptable, and a number of rednecks are supposed to provide the rest of the entertainment. These are a bit hit and miss: I thought the hotel clerk was pretty bad, but the gas station owner and the businessman with his truck drivers are quite funny.
The movie sags a bit when the businessman goes looking for Schoelen and Peck.
This is somewhat redeemed by a pretty nasty ending with actually quite good effects. That is to be expected when the special effects are done by someone who calls himself 'Screaming Mad George'.
Furthermore, the soundtrack is also quite effective and manages to build tension here and there.
Nice video for those who appreciate 80s cheese.

A sequel that has little to do with the first part, and the fact that this production only got the title The Curse II after it was completed, is therefore easy to believe. Fortunately, this project by director Frederico Prosperi does not lose too much power compared to the previous chapter and is mostly an enjoyable watch. The practical effects are charming and the chemistry between J. Eddie Peck and Jull Schoelen is infectious, despite the dialogue rarely being effectively written. The progression of the horror is predictable and the finale is actually a bit too cheesy, but the slowly unraveling escalation is entertaining enough. Unfortunately, this event ultimately falls short of the slightly more unique approach of the first part.
