La Nuit Est Mon Royaume plot

In a valiant attempt to save his colleague, a railroad repairman, Raymond (Jean Gabin) is badly injured. He is even blind but a doctor assures him that surgery can restore his sight. Raymond has a very hard time getting used to his handicap and he falls into a depression. Through a clever move by his sister, she persuades him to go to a school for the blind. The young blind teacher Louise opens a new world for him. When he actually finds that he can't regain his sight, the thought is unbearable.

As a railway worker, dockworker, and the like, he could often be seen in his extensive filmography of 100. As a blind man, it seems to me a unique occurrence, but no less brilliant for it, with the film largely carrying the film, as usual.

This work by Georges Lacombe ("Martin Roumagnac", also with Gabin) conveys a positive message: No matter how severe and how permanent the handicap, you are not written off and useless in life, even though it takes time, courage, and pain to arrive at this realization and accept it.
