United States, 1973. A spiritual awakening reaches the heart of almost every player on the Woodlawn High School football team. Also that of coach Tandy Gerelds. Great beautiful film. Well played. Too bad there are people who get an aversion to a film with a good message in it.

“I'd like to have a meeting with the football team. I've seen things. All across the country.”

For someone who has no interest in religion, this was torture. Woodlawn is also a sports movie, and that saves it a bit. But the focus on God, Jesus, and the influence religion has on the players and coaches is outrageous. Sean Astin is sympathetic as a hobbit, but here I could sometimes strangle him. As a religious fanatic he gets your blood boiling. Scary, very scary.

Unsubtle film that tries to present the Christian faith to the viewer by means of strongly emphasized sentiment. In this case, the sports world is emphasized and Sean Astin is chosen to present this as convincingly as possible. His acting (as well as that of the other characters) is convincing and the dialogues are conveyed to the viewer in a solid way, but ultimately director duo Andrew and Jon Erwin treat the subject as well as the content with too much simplicity and pushiness. It is relatively quickly clear what the good and the bad side is. The lack of a critical attitude and a certain nuance make Woodlawn an unpleasant film experience.
