Agoniya plot

"Monk. Heretic. Messiah. Madman."

Russia 1916. The country is in the third year of a war that seems to have no end. Chaos, hunger and destruction seem to be at their peak. On the other hand, the excessive luxury and corruption at court, where the rulers still have the hope of crushing the rebellion of "the rebels". However, there is a fearful premonition about the possible collapse of the Russian autocracy. Fear, despair and blind faith in divine providence create fertile ground for adventurers like Rasputin, who, as a friend of the royal family, eventually gains power over the Tsar and his ministers with tragic consequences.

Unconventional, fragmentary and theatrical film adaptation of a fascinating period in Russian history. It really didn't make for an interesting film. It lacks atmosphere and structure for that and it is too much filmed stage. With a lot of very (too many) great actors. I largely agree with Kappeuter, although I found slightly better scenes and a bit more structure in the second part.

It's boring but I'm also going to give 2.0*.

It is astonishing that Klimov manages to make a dragon of a film, which barely managed to captivate me, only to make a hard-hitting film four years later, which touches many people, including me.
