The story didn't really captivate me, because it was obvious from the start how things were going. Therefore a nice thriller, but nothing more than that. Especially because the acting of Simmons and Mitchum didn't appeal to me. The ending comes like a bolt from the blue and is by far the best part of the film.

RKO melonoir with central 'angel face' and femme fatale Jean Simmons in the role of manipulative liar. The story generally remains captivating and has few dips. A touch of courtroom drama can never hurt in my opinion. Mitchum plays an interesting character; visibly unperturbed, as if the whole affair does not harm him in any way. With tired eyes he makes his way through a jungle of madness, without losing any of his coolness. His fascination with Diane is never completely clear, as expected, and he approaches life with a certain indifference. He reminded me of Meursault from L'étranger, who also moves on autopilot and does not question the underlying motives. The difference is that in this case Frank is found innocent by the jury and therefore never (fully) transforms into an absurd hero. The pitch-black ending was an added value, as were the typically sharp dialogues.

If you think all American movies have a happy ending, you should watch this one.

Good noir but it remains a bit distant, it also grates a bit when Michum's character frankly keeps hanging around Diana despite the fact that he knows she is wrong.

I didn't see how he could just drop his other girlfriend who was clearly a lot more attractive for this other woman.
