Young Tony Fingleton wants only one thing and that is to escape from the family where his alcoholic father is terrorizing the family. He tries this by dedicating himself completely to swimming and becoming a champion.

Very gripping story. It is, of course, anything but a feel-good film, but that cannot be otherwise if you look at the facts objectively. I thought it took a long time before Dora left her bastard of a man, but if that really happened... And it's a shame that the film no longer shows that Harold overcomes his drinking problem and they are friends again. That would give a lighter ending to this very heavy film.
