After seeing Nightmare Weekend, luckily it wasn't too bad, but sometimes I wonder if we shouldn't even have movie nights with good films that we find on VHS instead of the bad films. Subspecies is a very standard vampire film like we have seen so many before, but the film still holds its own with beautiful locations, nice direction and reasonable acting. Unfortunately, very little else happens, the vampire make-up is quite ugly and the stop-motion demons look more funny than convincing. What they do succeed in, however, is dealing well with Eastern European folklore, where vampires were not such gentlemen as Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) or Anne Ryce would have us believe. Yet the film is only moderately entertaining, which is the most important thing.

Cheap film from the Band stable that remains remarkably well behaved (although this applies to all films from that stable) and looks cheap (and undoubtedly cost nothing). The setting is used cleverly and Hove carries the film with his long rubber fingers that constantly fold. The sequels continue on the same story, setting (and Hove), but I'm not going to venture into it anymore.

A traditional vampire film, with wooden stakes, pretty blondes and all, and including some real traditional bits of folklore from the vampire country. Unfortunately also quite unimaginative, apart from the terrible mistake with the devil puppets. Too bad, because with this location and this cast it could have been made into something much more impressive with little effort. The soundtrack is also quite ugly - and also rather traditional and unimaginative.
