“So it's not gonna be easy. It's going to be really hard. We're gonna have to work at this everyday, but I want to do that because I want you.”

The Notebook is THE romantic movie, and for good reason. It is a film that has just the right balance between romantic swoon, drama and a venomous slant. And The Notebook has a couple that you really hope they get together and stay together. This all sounds simple, but in many of these types of films it goes wrong. And you have McAdams and Gosling, and then you don't need much more.

The chemistry between the two is still unparalleled. The attraction and repulsion are played perfectly by both, and the quarrels are almost more interesting than the loving moments. "We're back to that? Are we back there? What about the past couple of days? They happened, you know."... Still one of the best scenes in romantic drama history. The other storyline around Rowlands and Garner is good too, but here it started to drag at some point. But it's Rowlands and Garner, so you almost automatically keep watching. Just like McAdams and Gosling.

I expected more from this because of the fairly high ratings, but unfortunately...

The film certainly exudes a certain solidity and quality. Good cast, great music, camera work, actors do their best and for example a very nice 1940s atmosphere in the beginning. An attempt has been made to create a pretty nice circle with the story, but one that I found very predictable. On the other hand, without the circle created, the film would have been sober mediocrity, but now the film has something extra. Still, I have little to nothing with the characters. I find Gosling, as is often the case at the beginning of his career, a bit eccentric and haughty, a strange figure and McAdams in this print is just a tuthola who, as Noah herself puts it at one point, does not know what she wants .

Because of the 'twist' that contains a few nice dialogues and slightly emotional moments and a good message, I don't immediately relegate the film to mediocrity. The idea is good in that sense, but the characters and what happens do not excite or touch me personally enough to impress.

Seen and done with it...next!

Western Aladdin without ghost. A big disappointment for me. What an annoying cliché movie. Very predictable, not well acted, no depth and then add dementia with a cheap way to move for a while. That disease was also not portrayed realistically at all. The only positives I can think of are the sets and the nice cars.
