Angie plot

Action film about three young people who try to survive in a harsh, confusing world. After returning from an orphanage, Angie tries to rebuild a normal life with her mother. However, mutual distrust is great. After a nasty incident with her mother's new boyfriend, Angie furiously moves in with her older brother. Although Angie is determined to make something of her life, she soon ends up in the criminal circuit. A modern, non-moralistic fairy tale in which friendship, sex and violence play an important role.

This film isn't bad, but it's not exactly a standout either. I expected a bit more action, but it didn't get much. But that's always to be expected with Dutch films, which never seem to invest any energy in a good action scene. Otherwise, I liked the story itself, and everything is delightfully brutal. It was also fun to see All Star: Daniel Boissevain as a 23-year-old big shot. And of course, Derk de Lint as a mafia boss. Jack Wouterse was also very entertaining, and in this film, he wasn't quite so overweight.

A bit of a mediocre Dutch film.

Incestuous irritations.

This crime drama about a criminal brother and sister is entertaining, but that's about it. The film is messy, the story is weak, and the so-called leading lady loses out to the true protagonist, Bossevain. The film descends into chaos towards the end, and an incestuous relationship, which further accentuates the previous low points, causes enough irritation to garner even less sympathy from the viewer.

Fail.

Today, Thursday, it was time for a movie marathon, and I kicked it off with this Angie, which I found at the thrift store on Tuesday. It's an all-too-familiar title that received a lot of attention in film magazines and programs in '94, but it's also a film that rarely gets aired on TV and is otherwise completely unknown to me. So I gave it a try, and it turned out not to be great, but it wasn't terrible either.

Angie's story pulls no punches in that it's a character who returns from an orphanage where an honest and normal life is the goal, but remains far removed from reality, with a troubled mother/daughter relationship and a brother involved in crime. And as they say, the blood boils where it can't go, with Angie slowly drawn into the criminal underworld, with an equally striking incestuous relationship with her brother, which is quite a bold move for the mid-90s.

Furthermore, the cast stands out with so many familiar faces, it's also striking that this appears to be Rottgering's only film, as I can't find anything else about this actress. The period setting is also striking, with the cars, utensils, brand names, and overall décor. Something like that serves as a catalyst to reflect on yourself in 1994, what you did, and so on, and what life was like back then. The film also has a few drawbacks: the acting isn't always great, the over-the-top and clichéd idea that no one can be trusted or is simply a dirty old fart is a bit exaggerated, and it falls a bit flat towards the end. So, while Angie is a decent film for once, it doesn't quite come close to an above-average rating.
