Blanche DuBois visits her younger, pregnant sister Stella and her husband Stanley in New Orleans. Stanley dislikes Blanche, and immediately begins to inquire about a house bequeathed to the sisters. He discovers that she has taken out a mortgage on the house, and has already spent all the money. Meanwhile, Blanche observes how Stanley mistreats her sister. "Stella! STELLAAAAAA!". Of course, it's all about the acting (Brando, Vivien Leigh) in this Elia Kazan adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play, but the director knows how to make it more than film theater. The close-ups in particular add an extra dimension. Brando introduces the white T-shirt and the wife beater (the latter almost literally) as a fashion item for the unhappy many.
