A wonderfully atmospheric ending to the Corman Poe film adaptations.

A great quote at the end sums up the film well: While, like a ghastly rapid river, through the pale door. A hideous throng rush out forever and laugh - but smile no more. So says Edgar Allan Poe in his book on which this film is based.

Vincent Price plays a great double role as Charles Dexter Ward (the 'good' great-grandson) and the evil Joseph Curwen.

He takes revenge in a wonderfully macabre way on the descendants of those who burned him alive 110 years earlier.

The rest of the acting is not nearly as iconic as Price's, but it is certainly well executed. Debra Paget makes a great contribution as the wife of Price's good character. In addition, the two ghostly servants of Price's evil character are also great. Love how they were able to make them and Price look nice and spooky with some makeup.

Furthermore, the soundtrack is particularly atmospheric and perfectly supports the atmospheric images in the castle and the mist-shrouded surroundings.

Once again highly recommended for fans of "old-fashioned" Gothic horror films. An excellent ending to the Corman/Poe series in which only "The Raven" is a bit of an outsider. I can only recommend this and the other film adaptations to fans.

"For from this night onward, you shall bear my curse."

Last night I had a hard time choosing which movie to put on, I was quite tired so I didn't want something that would be too sleep-inducing. Ultimately we decided to go for an atmospheric horror classic, which isn't too long either.

After several mysterious disappearances of young women in Arkham, Joseph Curwen is burned to death by the villagers. However, he places a curse on the village and swears to return. A hundred years later, Charles Dexter Ward (who closely resembles Curwen) arrives with his wife to claim his ancestor's inheritance, namely his palace. However, the palace has a strange influence on Ward...

The Haunted Palace is based on The Case of Charles Dexter Ward by HP Lovecraft, making this the first film adaptation of his work. Although the film still has the same decor as Corman's Poe film adaptations, the Lovecraftian atmosphere is clearly noticeable. The producer did publish the film as if it were a story by Poe, Lovecraft was not that well known at the time. The film also deviates considerably from the original story, but the end result is certainly not bad (The Resurrected (1992) follows the story more closely). A remarkable fact is that Francis Ford Coppola has written some dialogues as a writer.

The film is beautifully shot in Panavision format, which is a real plus. Vincent Price again acted wonderfully in his typical way and the rest of the cast is also typical Corman. The castle looked very cool and the studio fog, maté paintings and lightning effects were wonderful again. However, the monster in the pit looked particularly cheap (didn't even move). The ending was also a bit rushed.

Yet this film mainly relies on its wonderful atmosphere. I enjoyed this Vincent Price film from start to finish.

One of the Edgar Allan Poe film adaptations by Roger Corman? Well no, not quite. It's a Lovecraft film adaptation, but Corman thought, no one knows that one, so I'll just pretend it's Poe. Completely in the style of his Poe film adaptations and perhaps one of his very best. Great horror in which Vincent Price visits his inherited castle and becomes increasingly possessed by his great-great-grandfather who was burned at the stake by angry villagers more than a hundred years ago.
