Freya McAllister is an ordinary teenager, shy and modest, with her whole future ahead of her. But everything changes on the night of her prom. Then she begins to hear voices, thousands of voices that only she can hear. They storm her incessantly from all sides and are unstoppable. The doctors diagnose severe schizophrenia and have Freya admitted to Brookridge Mental Hospital. She lives in a lonely madness for eight long years, until Dr. Michael Welles comes into her life and tells her she's not crazy. She is telepathic. The voices in her head belong to all the men, women and children around her. Michael, a brilliant research scientist in bio-psychology, teaches her how to control her telepathic abilities and shows her that it is not a curse, but a powerful gift.
