Taking Lives plot

"He would kill to be you."

Illeana Scott is an FBI profiler who ignores mainstream methods and trusts her instincts alone. When a wave of murders swept Montreal and the detectives find themselves at a loss, her expertise is called upon. Scott discovers that the chameleon killer is taking over the lives and identities of his victims. Her unorthodox methods cause her to become estranged from her colleagues who don't like her special gift. But when the cool Illeana unexpectedly gets involved in a romance, she too starts to doubt her intuition. In a big city unknown to her and left to her own devices, the dangerous investigation becomes more and more personal and no one can be trusted.

Taking Lives is a film where the plot takes shape fairly quickly and there are few to no surprises left. This made it a bit boring for me. Little to no tension does not suit a film like this. Quickly forgotten...

Bad. Apparently I've seen too many of these kinds of movies, because I immediately thought that Hawke's character would be the culprit. And of course you know he's going to end up in bed with Jolie's character, though there doesn't seem to be any chemistry between the characters at all. In short, it all feels forced and that is also apparent from the end where you can see the "twist" coming for miles, that it is strange that an FBI agent is allowed to operate on Canadian soil with a weapon, and the fact that the perpetrator had decades to kill his mother, but only now does it in the time frame of the film.

The music is apparently by Philip Glass, who is nevertheless regarded as one of the most important classical composers of this century. I have to say that I am not impressed at all with this soundtrack, it sounds quite generic.

So quite disappointing in many ways. 1*.

caruso.

It remains a changeable director for me. Clearly someone who explores all sides of the film world a bit. As a result, almost every film I see of him is a completely different film when I put it next to his other films. Yet there is always a certain degree of quality within his films, only the setting is variable.

In this case, I found the film I saw in the opening a lot stronger than the film that fills up the rest. Especially because the detective thing is a lot tougher to get through. Especially because I think Jolie is only partially suitable to carry the role. Towards the final she comes out a bit stronger, but everything before that is not really of the kind that I will remember.

The final is surprising and I did not expect the outcome immediately. The script is just a bit more advanced than the average film of this kind, but the problem is that Caruso can't really make it run smoothly. The film is a bit too slow in the transition and the editing as well as the camera work too flawed to present each scene in the way that Caruso probably had in mind.

The acting could have been a bit stronger at times and the film lacks really interesting characters, but otherwise it has enough surprises not to become completely boring. Still, it took me quite some effort to get through the film, too much to actually enjoy the film properly. Hence this figure.
