Ouch.

I thought, a film with Rutger Hauer and Sylvia Kristel that I haven't seen yet, I really need to catch up. But it turns out to be a typical 70s attempt that barely succeeded.

The images of the landscapes and old buildings may have once been beautiful. Apparently filmed on the Isle of Man. But there's not much left; the colors are faded and out of balance—not a criticism, as I don't do much with damaged old footage myself. But that was the good news, because the acting is a complete waste of time, a completely uninteresting and dull costume drama that was originally difficult to access but now completely loses its appeal. The actors are overacting with a nail-biting theatricality—if you can even call it that, it occasionally comes across as a local theater group's variety show. Hauer, disappointingly enough, is the worst of it, and the role absolutely doesn't suit him. Just like that mustache absolutely doesn't suit him. But Kristel and the rest of the cast are also terrible, the only one who comes across as anything good is Rita Tushingham—and, okay, Kees Brusse has a good scene. But even that's not the worst part. That's because the film—yes, even in Dutch—was dubbed afterward, and it was done rather amateurishly. It's like being transported back in time to a German TV channel, it's so messy.

In my opinion, Eye could have saved themselves the trouble with this restoration. Even if you absolutely must see every one of Hauer's films—or Kristel's, for that matter—you'd still be better off skipping this one.
