Tried this one, but I didn't know what to expect right away. I didn't think it was a bad film, although the film is more drama/mystery than real thriller/horror. The film has to rely more on atmosphere than scares or something.

In terms of cast, we couldn't complain and they all played their roles well.

Well, fun to catch up on on TV or something, but perhaps a bit too long to be fully captivating.

Half.

There are things that are quite successful in this film. But also a lot that are less successful. The best thing about the film itself is also the atmosphere itself and of course the sets. These create a beautiful, nice old-fashioned and mysterious atmosphere.

Such a castle where the story takes place is ideal material for a horror film, for example. It is therefore a bit of a mystery to me why another Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde story has to be placed in it, because this castle would have been more effective in a normal ghost story I think.

Also the direction is not worthy enough for a horror movie. The director clearly has talent for filmmaking, just not for a horror movie. Many attempts are made to make it all exciting and mysterious but they fail.

Despite the beautiful sets, the story never manages to become exciting or intense. The drama still manages to captivate a bit and there is enough atmosphere to keep the film just above water, but it does fail in the area where it should score.

Good acting by Malkovich, less satisfied with Roberts. She plays just a little too innocent and just a little too "good". I thought it was a little too exaggerated. For the rest not a bad film, but one that starts to get boring after a while because it just doesn't want to get exciting.

What a bland meal.

It's fun to make a movie about Jekyll and Hyde, but as soon as those names are mentioned, everyone knows how it ends. There should be something to compensate for that lack of tension, but unfortunately, this movie does the opposite with an unprecedentedly slow pace and zero content - but accompanied by wailing violins that are supposed to give you the feeling that something terrible is going on. Yes, but that's this movie, not what you get to see.

Malkovich is also exactly miscast, his mannerisms fill the void of the story far too much. Roberts, despite having the lead role, hardly gets any space and her character has no content. And then there's the ending. Hopeless.
