White Noise plot
"The line separating the living from the dead has been crossed."
The quiet life of architect Jonathan Rivers (Michael Keaton) is changed by the unexplained death of his wife Anna. Some time later, Jonathan is approached by a man who claims to have contact with the deceased Anna through EVP - Electronic Voice Phenomenon - where the dead communicate with the living via audio and video equipment. Jonathan is skeptical at first about this story but soon believes that the messages really come from Anna. His quest through the EVP and the supernatural messages opens a door to the other world, through which something unpleasant enters his life.

A very intriguing premise with two fine actors in the lead roles (although Michael Keaton pleaded guilty to "phoning in' some of his scenes" according to the IMDb trivia page), but from the moment Keaton goes to help the dead the film loses his interesting focus, and then I just get too much time to realize that RuudC is absolutely right when he writes on April 4, 2012 that "Ghosts are still dim creatures, by the way. Always popping up when the person just isn't looking." The last ten minutes are pretty creepy, but that suddenly a human perpetrator appears and that his identity is quite unpredictable does take the sting out of that. When I rented this movie from the video store at the time, I had high hopes that were only partially fulfilled, and now that I've tried it again (and almost forgot the entire plot) it's no different. Too bad, but luckily it's not a punishment to have to watch Deborah Kara Unger.

Great thriller.
Now EVP is a more frequently used subject in films, but Sax gives it his own twist. In the beginning it was a bit of a shock when he chose a murder-related plot, but in combination with the bizarre and terrifying monitor images, the tension is increased enormously. Towards the end it becomes somewhat banal, but then you have already had a strong 80 minutes on it.

Pretty cool.
Not a bad film at all, which I hadn't expected much from beforehand. All the more surprising that this would be one of the nicer paranormal thrillers I've come across. That is mainly due to a piece of good directing in between.
Keaton has always been a great actor. He always has a bit of an angry, sarcastic appearance. The fact that he has a more serious role here is sometimes a bit more difficult to take seriously. McNiece also makes quite an impression here.
But what really helps the film is the directing. And especially visually. Obviously a lot of attention has gone into some nice tricks. Especially some shots are very cool, camera use is in general very top.
But the scenes with EVP are all quite atmospheric. There is sometimes some innocent creepiness, which of course remains limited (with the viewer) but ultimately turns out quite attractive. It is mainly due to the direction that the evil figures are often only briefly in the picture.
It could have all been a bit scarier and more challenging, but Sax mainly sticks to quality here. This makes for some very atmospheric scenes, and in general a very entertaining thriller, which sometimes collides with the horror.
Towards the end the film seems to lose some peace and to make a somewhat stiff landing, but eventually in the very last scenes the film manages to pick itself up again. Some strong choices with the direction help with this. The movie could have been a bit scarier at times, but overall this is a pretty cool movie.
